Bone Grafting FAQs

How long does it take to recover from a bone graft?

Recovery time depends on the injury or defect being treated and the size of the bone graft. Your recovery may take 2 weeks to 3 months. The bone graft itself will take up to 3 months or longer to heal. Can I go on as normal?  Depending on the case, you may need to avoid extreme exercise for up to 6 months. Ask your Simi Valley Periodontics doctor what you can and cannot safely do. In order to keep the bone graft area clean and dry, follow all instructions provided to you by your specialist.

What is the success rate of bone grafts?

Bone grafting is beneficial in enhancing bones that are lost due to trauma or natural or pathologic process. Following your procedure, new bone growth will replace the transplanted material.

Bone grafting success rate is high and shows less complications as compared to allografts and xenografts for grafting implant sites.

Can my bone graft come out?

Your bone graft is made up of many particles, so you may find small particles in your mouth for the first several days following surgery. Do not be alarmed by this. It is normal for some of the graft material to come out of the site.

Also, there may be a temporary white covering over the bone graft to protect it. The covering will usually fall out within the first week.

However, there are some things you need to avoid to ensure an efficient healing process. Avoid vigorously rinsing or spitting for 3-5 days following the procedure, applying pressure to the surgical site, lifting or pulling your lip to look at the surgical site, and smoking.

Which bone grafting material is the best?

Specialists can choose from several different materials for a bone graft. For example, they are made from autograft, allograft, xenograft, and synthetic materials.

While allograft material tends to be chosen the majority of the time for each procedure, the materials are chosen on a case to case basis, to ensure the patient receives the most beneficial treatment.
