How Painful is a Gum Graft?

A gum graft, otherwise known as a gingival graft, is a procedure done to correct gum recession. Gum recession can affect your health and the appearance of your gums and smile. At Simi Valley Periodontics, a gum graft is a procedure that is routinely performed by an expert periodontist.

The procedure involves placing a small amount of new tissue in an area where little to no gum tissue is present. Gum grafting is recommended to patients to prevent further gum recession and to cover the roots of the teeth that have been exposed. There are a variety of sources in which the new tissue may be harvested from, but is most commonly harvested from the palate (roof of the mouth). Prior to the procedure, the area is numbed to ensure maximum comfort. The new tissue is then carefully sutured in place.

Once the procedure is complete, your body’s natural recovery process will begin to take place and the new blood vessels will grow into the graft, which will then become combined with the surrounding tissue.

Is a Gum Graft Painful?

A gum graft procedure can be a painless experience with the help of local anesthetics. While there may be discomfort after the procedure, your periodontist’s goal is to make the actual procedure as painless as possible to minimize any discomfort during your visit. The level of pain that you may experience ultimately depends on the type of gum graft that is performed. For instance, if no tissue is harvested from your palate, then it is likely that you won't experience any pain at all. However, if there is tissue that is removed, then it is expected to feel some discomfort after the procedure.

The anesthesia that will be administered during the procedure will wear off after a few hours. And as a result, this is when you may feel discomfort. Swelling is also common for the first few days after the procedure. Your periodontist will recommend over-the-counter medication, such as Tyelnol or Ibuprofen to help alleviate pain. In addition, antibiotics may be prescribed if you are at risk of an infection.
